EBF4 Medal Earned

The "Medal Earned" pop-up in EBF4

Medals are a gameplay feature in the Epic Battle Fantasy series, introduced in Epic Battle Fantasy 2. They are awarded to the player when certain conditions are met. These conditions vary wildly between medals; some are awarded for levelling up and trying out different functions of the game (such as learning new skills, defeating enemies, or even visiting the credits page on the main menu), others are awarded for completing story-related events, and some require extremely specific events (such as using a particular skill or item, or finding a secret in the game itself).

Medals primarily serve as bragging rights and replay potential, as players must work hard to find them all. However, some games and websites provide rewards for finding certain medals or a certain number of medals. Furthermore, EBF3 and EBF5 both have additional sections that unlock with a certain amount of medals. Of course, none of these are required to beat the game and typically just hold either a difficult challenge or extra equipment and items.

EBF2 Medals

Medals screen in EBF2

There are 27 Medals in Epic Battle Fantasy 2, with 7 of them being exclusive to the EBF Collection release of the game. They serve no in-game purpose, acting as a way of acknowledging the player's feats.

Notes:

  • Prior to the EBF Collection update, each completion medal required a separate playthrough, i.e., winning the game on Epic difficulty wouldn't get you the medals for clearing Normal and Hard difficulties.
  • For medals related to skill bonuses, you may want to consult with the Skill Bonuses article for information on how to get the skill bonus to appear for selection.
Name Description & Notes
Kitten Kart Destroy the cat's mobile fortress (Complete wave 5)
Guardian Smash up an elite sentry (Complete wave 8)
Giga Golem Master the elements (Complete wave 13)
Sand Worm Eat worms for breakfast (Complete wave 16)
Zombie Hydra Keep killing it until it dies (Complete wave 19)
Valkyrie Defeat the final boss and save the world (Complete the game)
Overkill Hit the damage display limit of 99999 (Must be done in a single hit. Try Unleash with Soul Eater, Sword Heart skill bonus and Attack buffed against a foe weak to Dark (Giga Golem's Ice form, its Ice Bit, or Spirit) and with Defence debuffed)
Sword Master Try out all 11 swords ("Sword history" doesn't depend on nor is saved in a save file, and lasts for as long as the game is running. The starter sword isn't automatically considered tried out, be it a new game or a loaded save file)
Beast Master Complete the Bestiary by scanning all foes (27 in total, including both forms of the Giga Golem and every single part of the Valkyrie tank, whose turrets are generated at random. See List of Foes in Epic Battle Fantasy 2 to identify any you might have missed)
Max Radiation Fire the Ion Cannon for the first time (Obtained after beating the Guardian. Letting Lance fire it also counts)
Invincible Survive with 1HP remaining (Must be done by Matt. Try the Survivor skill bonus)
Noob Kill yourself (Is achieved only for having Natalie die to Meow Meow or Ion Cannon, even if the latter was fired by Lance. Possible suicide from Mystery Potion doesn't count)

Middle Tier Beat the game on Normal difficulty
Leet Tier Beat the game on Hard difficulty
God Tier Beat the game on Epic difficulty

Epic Battle Fantasy 3[]

EBF3 Medals

Medals screen in EBF3

The third Epic Battle Fantasy game features three times as many medals as the previous one, and offers an in-game incentive to collect them. Each of the game's locations has a bonus area full of useful items and equipment, but the character blocking the path will only move if the player has a certain number of medals. A new bonus area opens with every ten medals the player collects, with the exception of the one on the Volcano Peak, which requires all 60 medals to open.

Notes:

  • A third of all medals have their names and descriptions hidden until unlocked (marked by a question mark instead of an exclamation mark), often requiring very specific actions that a player may or may not try during a playthrough, such as using a specific consumable item. This concept was mostly scrapped for future games, though some medals in next games give about as much information on how to obtain them, especially in EBF5.
  • For medals related to quests, you may want to consult with the quests list.
  • The 2016 update has reduced the difficulty of some minigames and lowered the requirements for their medals. This article lists both updated and old requirements, with the latter marked by brackets.
  • Note that the game speed option in the Steam version of the game affects minigames as well.

EBF3 Medal Akron unused
EBF3 Medal Heart unused

Two unused medal icons exist within the game's files: one depicts Akron and is found amongst other boss medals, and the other one is a screenshot of the icon displayed when a character eats an item they like, found amongst the bottom secret medals. Neither have a name or a description assigned, but there isn't much room to guess what they could've been intended for.

Epic Battle Fantasy 4[]

Medalsebf4

EBF4 medals screen before the update

EBF4 BM Medals

... and after

EBF4 v3 Medals

... and again

The medal system is largely the same as previous games, but the number of medals has increased to 104 (only 78 prior to the Battle Mountain update), and they no longer serve an in-game purpose. That number has since increased to 110 as of the v3 update. Once again, the difficulty of acquiring Medals varies wildly, with some requiring Epic difficulty to obtain.

Notes: ven during New Game++, when they would be easier due to the amount of passive stat boosts accumulated.

  • The battle must be won for any "kill a specific foe"-type medals to be saved, e.g., you won't get the Lumberjack medal for defeating Mighty Oak in the boss rush and then fleeing it.
  • As in EBF5, damage medals also count inflicting Instant Death on a foe, except if via Doom. Damage will be equal to victim's maximum health. Other damaging status effects will not work, and neither would healing the target.
  • For the medals requiring opening chests and finding secrets, you may want to consult with the chests & secrets list.
  • And the quests list for quest-related medals.

First Blood Defeat your first foe, and become a hardened killer.
Monster Hunter Defeat 100 foes in total, and develop a taste for their flesh.
Extinction Event Defeat 1,000 foes in total, and become a serious threat to the ecosystem.
Start the Game Already Smash 100 Idols on the loading screen, because clicking randomly makes the game load faster. (Doesn't unlock instantly, but instead is unlocked after getting to the main menu.)
Overkill Completely obliterate a feeble enemy. The cute ones deserve it. (Deal over 5x more damage than a foe's max HP)
First Casualty Watch a player die, as you do nothing to help. (Suffer your first death — i.e. let a player's HP reach 0)
Step Over the Dead Clear away a player's rotting corpse. (Replace a dead character with the Backup character)
Lunchtime Take a break and have something to eat outside of battle. (Use a food item in the overworld; permanent stat boosters don't count)
Taste Pain Drink a whole bottle of Chilli Sauce, and eat the actual bottle too. (In overworld, attempting to feed Chilli Sauce to a character whose limit bar is fully charged will not consume the item, yet still trigger the medal)
Limits Were Broken Use an awesome limit break for the first time.
Slime Cat Find a Slime Cat and discover the Warp Zone.
Slime Cat King Find all the Slime Cats, and rule the world map. (Battle Mountain ones only count for this if you bought the Premium content)
Lost Ruins Find the hidden ruins in the jungle. (Use the Blue Scroll to navigate through the "endless" map area at Lankyroot Jungle. The item must be in your inventory; the area cannot be accessed without it, even if you know the way)
Used Strength Push an unwanted block out of the way. It will not be missed.
Used Cut Cut down a dangerous path-blocking bush. Don't worry, they don't have feelings. (Requires The Axe)

Used... Ladder? Bridge a gap, with the power of ladders.
Panty Thief Steal some underwear. Perverts pay good money for stuff like this.

Power On Power up a set of factory doors, and open the next area. (Requires a Battery)
Keys Unlock Stuff Use a key to access new treasures, but you should have figured that out on your own.
Winter is Coming Freeze a foe, and then hit them again for massive damage. (Hit a frozen foe, it doesn't matter if damage is nullified/absorbed by elemental resistance)
Burn Baby Burn Set a foe on fire, and watch them burn. (Have the status activate on a foe, no matter how it was inflicted and whether its damage is nullified/absorbed. The medal often achieved during the very first battles because of foes that inflict Burn on themselves or enter the battle with it on them already, such as Tanuki Dog and Flame Sprite)
Water Conducts Shock a wet foe with a thunder attack (or ice, if you prefer).
Death Penalty Kill a foe with an instant-death attack. (Inflict the Instant Death status on a foe, not just kill a foe with an attack that can potentially cause the status)
Extra Lives Survive death: Be killed, but do not die. (Have the Auto-Revive status effect revive a player)
Power of Courage Survive a powerful attack with 1HP. (Have the Morale status effect save a player from death. A lucky drop to 1 HP will not count)
Best Customer Completely buy-out an equipment shop. (Purchase every piece of equipment in a shop)

Kamikaze Kill yourself with a spell or summon. (Simplest way: use Sacrifice or Black Hole)
Invaders from Space Summon the most powerful creature to obliterate your enemies.
Beastmaster Unlock all summon creatures.
Treasure Hunter Collect 280 treasure chests. There's more, but getting all of them could be frustrating. (333 after the Battle Mountain update — now impossible to obtain without Premium content, as there aren't enough chests in non-premium areas)
Keen Eye Discover 30 secrets. There's actually way more than that though. (Interact with white sparkles somewhere on the overworld, or switch movement mode to mouse-based and hover the cursor over non-walkable tiles — it becomes an exclamation mark if the tile contains a secret)
Millionaire Save up 1,000,000 chocolate coins.
Unknown Power Level Find an unscannable secret foe.
Zoology Student Scan a foe and begin filling in the bestiary.
Zoology Expert Scan all foes and complete the bestiary. (There are 124 scannable foes without the Battle Mountain update and 147 with. See List of Foes in Epic Battle Fantasy 4 to identify any you might have missed)

Art Appreciator Check out some of the art galleries. (Main Menu → Gallery → Concept Art)
Chicken Molester Seriously stress out a chicken. Just don't stab it. (Interact with a chicken)

Battle Mountain Update[]

Name Description & Notes

Master Blacksmith Fully upgrade 30 weapons. Don't just use the same weapons all the time, that's boring!

Eagle Eye Discover 60 secrets. There may be a few more, but we won't force you to find them all.
30M Damage Deal 30,000,000 damage with a single hit. Is that even possible?! (Typically requires a long setup with maximizing damage output and minimizing enemy defences, including status effects that boost damage of certain element. Practically impossible without Premium content bought, as it is oriented for mid/late New Game++ with a lot of permanent stat food accumulated from three playthroughs)
Worm Control Defeat Sand Worm on Epic Difficulty.
Lo and Behold Defeat Beholder on Epic Difficulty.
Unprotected Defeat Protector on Epic Difficulty.
Dragon Slayer Defeat Zombie Hydra on Epic Difficulty.
Trees Go To War Defeat the stronger version of Mighty Oak, on Epic Difficulty. (This and all medals below are impossible to obtain without Premium content bought, as they depend on the new Premium-exclusive Battle Mountain area)

v3 Update[]

Name Description & Notes
Stomach Pains Reset the stat boosting items on any player.
Cheeky Cheater Win a battle with any battle-related cheat enabled.
10 More Years Look through 10 years of fan-made art in the fan art gallery.
Mammoth Feast Defeat Wooly Mammoth on Epic Difficulty.
Smashing Pumpkins Defeat Jack on Epic Difficulty.
Ace Challenger Defeat any boss on Epic Difficulty with all challenges enabled.

Unavailable[]

At first, there was only one unused medal icon, which depicts a surfer NPC — judging by its order in the icons list, it was originally intended for the NPC Helper medal. The Battle Mountain update introduced five more — two related to bosses and three found amongst Endless Battle medal icons — and changed the Treasure Hunter icon, leaving the previous version in the files.

The two boss medals are the most complete, having names, descriptions and icons specified, but no way programmed to achieve them until the v3 update:

  • Mammoth Feast — "Defeat Wooly Mammoth on Epic Difficulty."
  • Smashing Pumpkins — "Defeat Jack on Epic Difficulty."

For three Endless Battle medal icons, only one medal is (partially) coded, which would require to pass 60 waves, though its name and description are simply copied over from Legendary Heroes. It also cannot be achieved.

Stars[]

After the v2 update of the game, the medals of the last 2 rows (ie all the Epic difficulty medals) will get a star shaped mark on their bottom right corner if the player manages to complete the requirements to obtain the medal with all Challenges and no Cheats (save for those with an asterisk) enabled. This can be achieved even after the medal itself has already been obtained.

Epic Battle Fantasy 5[]

EBF5 Medals free

EBF5 medals screen in free versions

EBF5 Medals paid

... and in paid versions

This section is incomplete. You can help Epic Battle Fantasy Wiki by adding required information to it.
To do: Some intro text that gotta include what is their in-game purpose, and more notes for medals if any are needed, such as the earliest method to obtain some.
  • Before the v2 update, Medals that required Epic difficulty were not obtainable during a New Game +. As medals are still not bound to a specific save file, you can start a normal new game to get missed ones.
  • It is no longer necessary for the battle to be won for any "kill a specific foe"-type medals to be saved, as the medal will be given instantly after the foe's death, e.g., the Pop Eye achievement will instantly be given after defeating Jotun, including during the Boss Rush. It is also no longer necessary to even survive the encounter, e.g., Twisted Metal will still be awarded even if the explosion from Lancelot's death kills the entire party and causes a Game Over, including if there are any turrets still present.
  • As in EBF4 and EBF3, damage medals also count inflicting Instant Death on a foe, except if via Doom. Damage will be equal to victim's maximum health. Other damaging status effects will not work, and neither would healing the target.
    • Summons also cannot get damage medals.
  • For the medals requiring completing quests, you may want to consult with the quests list.

Wandering Out Begin your adventure by wandering away from home and into the jungle.
Slip 'n' Slide Get familiar with some annoying puzzle mechanics. Enter the Ice Cave.
Over the Wall Enter the fascists' fortress with a dangerous mission in mind.
Party Hard A bunch of poorly drawn cartoon characters get together and smash things. Get all 5 characters. This is awarded after defeating Lance & Neon Valkyrie.
Swamped I have a feeling these woods might actually be haunted. Enter the swamp section of the Mystic Woods (Entering zone H2 Mystic Woods is sufficient).
River Rapids Sail towards unknown lands on a dinky raft that's totally sea-worthy. Enter Rainbow River while you have The Raft.
Arctic Expedition Unpreparedness won't stop this adventure. Enter Frozen Valley.
Family Roots Remember what you came from, and keep visiting your family even when you're famous. Talk to Anna's Mom & Dad NPCs in Anna's house after reaching Redpine Town.
Alien Landscape Look upon the remains of a devastated landscape. Reach The Rapture.
World Saved? Defeat the Cosmic Gigalith final boss and finish the main story.
Instant Knowledge Learn a completely new skill through sheer willpower alone - no practice involved.
Bonus Skills Adjust your default abilities to something more unique, and show off the real you. Equip an extra/shared skill from the Skills menu. Limit Breaks don't count.
Roid Rage Get a taste of performance-enhancing steroids, like bacon or bread.
Cooling Off And now, we wait. Quite a while, too. Use a skill with a 10-turn cooldown — Star Blast, Nine Lives, M.O.A.B, or Phyrnna's Blessing.
Upgrade Complete Fully upgrade a weapon - this is the best use of your cash! Also works with hats and armor, but not flairs.
Conductive Status Exploit a status effect that increases elemental damage. Hurt a foe that has [status] with [element]: Wet + Ice/Thunder, Dry + Fire/Bomb, Chill + Ice/Water, Light + Wind, Heavy + Earth, Tired + Bio, Weaken + Dark, Curse + Holy. Can also be done by a weather attack.
Second Chance Don't die when you have been killed - the Morale and Auto-Revive statuses can get you out of trouble!
Sometimes Invincible Have fun with the Enchanted and Invisible status effects. They may or may not be useful. Have either nullify the damage of an attack. Works on both players and foes, and can also be done by a weather attack.
Berzerker's Rage Get inflicted with the Berserk status, and go mad with power.
Disarmed Get inflicted with the Disable status, and have some of your skills become unusable for a few turns.
Fog of War Get inflicted with the Shroud status, and succumb to the pain of missing information.
Uncontrollable Hunger Get inflicted with the Hungry status, and pig out on whatever you can find.
Confusion Get inflicted with the Confused status, and lose control of your own body.
Back Attack What? Not even backup players are safe from taking damage?! Have a backup character get hit by an attack, such as by Neon Valkyrie's Ram.
RIP in Peace Honour the dead by shuffling away their corpses and bringing in reinforcements. Move a dead player into backup.
Freebie Watch your enemies be killed by their own environment, or by each other. Awarded when "Player weather" (except when it's a summon) kills anything.
Owned Sometimes the enemies don't even have to do anything. Awarded when "Foe weather" (except when it's a summon) kills anything.
EXP Pipeline Cut down over 1,337 innocent foes, for those sweet battle rewards.
Limits Broken Use a limit break - and if you're reading this in advance - remember to set up a combo first!
Nuclear Holocaust Destroy the world several times over by trying out every single Limit Break attack. 18 in total: 7th Heaven, Absolute Zero, Annihilate, Black Hole, Cleaver, Death Metal, Genesis, Hidden Power, Ion Cannon, Mighty Oak, Mother Earth, Nuke, Oblivion, Ragnarok, Supernova, The Creator, The Destroyer, Tsunami; the v2 update also added 2 more: Art Attack and Seven Swords. Its progress depends on the save file, so there's no point in reloading the save to refill the Limit bar.
Unlimited Blade Works Collect 150 different items of equipment. You don't even need all of that. Includes all equip types, including weapons and flairs.
Mercy Let a surrendered foe go free. Sometimes it feels good to be good.
No Mercy Execute a surrendered foe in cold blood. You get EXP either way, so it really is senseless violence.
Unusual Torture Melt down a captured foe and use it as a crafting material. The foe's consent is not required. Upgrade an equip that requires a specific summon as material, e.g., Lance's Shadow Blaster that requires a Red Flybot at level 3.
Slave Trader Enslave a beast, later to be forced into combat against its will.
Beast Tamer Tame a strong monster as you work your way up the food chain. Capture a foe with ≤20 base score.
Not Pok*mon Equip more than 6 summons, but no more than 18, as that would be simply unfair.
None Are Safe Capture 50 different foes. No living creature can escape the completionist's snare.
None Are Free Capture 100 different foes. Leave no free animals to graze the fields - all bow before their master.
Boss's Boss Imprison your boss in a shipping container, for later use. Capture Jotun or any foe with ≤4 base score.
X-Ray Goggles Scan 125 different foes. (Captured foes count as scanned!) There are 149 foes in the free version, 164 in the paid version and 216 in the paid V2 version.
Secret Farm Help a wizard grow totally legal herbs in a barn. Solve the walk-once puzzle in Redpine Town.
Video Games Talk to every type of games console. They won't talk back. 5 in total: Matt's house in Hope Harbor, Hope Harbor's item shop, Anna's house in Greenwood Village, Jamie's house in Greenwood Village, and Redpine Town's steroid shop.
Book Worm Read every book in the library - not just for this achievement, but to actually learn! Found in Greenwood Village; 22 books in total. The v2 update added 8 more for a total of 30.
Art Connoisseur View a fine piece of framed artwork. View any painting in the Grand Gallery or Iron Fortress.
Squishy Click on something squishy a few times. There's several ways of getting this one... The successor of the Pervert medal from EBF3 and 4. Click 10 times on any of the following: the chest of Natalie's and Natalia's battle sprites or Natalie's chest in 7th Heaven's animation if cleavage is enabled in game's settings, the eye of Jotun's, Skadi's and Sól's battle sprites (but not their other clickable parts), Slime Bunny and Blue Elephant female hats' battle sprites, or the snow sculptures on players' frozen battle sprites

EBF5 Medal unknown This Blue Elephant icon replaces the default icon if the Cleavage filter is disabled, and is used for the connected Steam achievement.

Where's Satan? Discover the demon hiding in plain sight. Click on a goat, a penguin, a seagull or a snail in the overworld until their sprite turns red and flips upside down (2% chance).
Code Breaker Discover one of several secret codes. Enter the lever code for Mystic Woods' lever puzzle, the code in the Rainbow Gate, or any valid code for the Forgotten Ruins' flower puzzle
Cartographer Fill in the entire world map - which doesn't include secret underground areas.
Give 100% Buff yourself to the max. Some equips will help out with this. (Also counts buffs on foes)
Cat Person Intimidate NoLegs into surrendering, rather than beating him to a pulp. Hit the cat with a Water-elemental attack (such as Geyser or Water Slime), and let him run.
Nice Guy Flirt with Natalie to calm her down, avoiding the unsightly beating up of a girl. Apply Lovable on all alive players.
Child Minder Force an exhausted Anna to surrender, rather than having to knock out a child. See Anna's boss page for how to make her surrender
Seduction Exploit Lance's weakness to make him surrender, but only during his 3rd and final appearance. Get both Neon Valkyrie and Lance below 29% HP and use Natalie's 7th Heaven Limit Break. The tank can be destroyed, but Lance must be alive.
Helping Hand Complete 10 quests for NPCs, and experience the joy of helping others.

Unavailable[]

There is one unused medal coded, which has a name and a description, but no icons assigned:

  • Master of Gods — "Capture an immensely powerful being, proving that not even Gods are safe from enslavement."

Judging by its position in the medals list and an empty "if captured a foe with ≤3 base score" condition in the capturing script, it was intended as a harder version of Boss's Boss. Despite its description, only one of the foes fufilling its requirement can be considered a God (God itself).

Stars[]

EBF5 Medals Stars

After the v2 update of the game, the medals of the last 2 rows (ie all the Epic difficulty medals) will get a star shaped mark on their bottom right corner if the player manages to complete the requirements to obtain the medal with all Challenges and no Cheats (save for those with an asterisk) enabled. This can be achieved even after the medal itself has already been obtained.

Trivia[]

Epic Battle Fantasy 5[]

  • The icon for Cooling Off depicts a Djinn from the Golden Sun series, in which they normally have lengthy cooldowns after being summoned.

Epic Battle Fantasy Collection[]

  • The description for Lazarus Gibbed in Brawl Royale is a reference to an iconic scene from the Australian film Crocodile Dundee, when the titular protagonist utters a similar statement in regards to his bowie knife when compared to a thug's switchblade.
  • The medal Punching Bag in Bullet Heaven was renamed to Need More Hearts, probably to avoid confusion with an unrelated medal in Cat Cafe.
