The Black Dragon is a foe introduced in Epic Battle Fantasy 4. It is found mostly in the Temple of Godcat, but also makes an early appearance in the Lava Cave of Lankyroot Jungle.

Appearance[]

The Black Dragon is a smaller, recolored version of Abyss, the Pyrohydra head from Epic Battle Fantasy 3. As its name suggests, it is predominantly black in coloration, save for its teeth and the scales on the underside of its long neck (which are tan) and its two pairs of narrow red eyes. It has numerous horns and spikes on its head, as well as large fins on its jowls; smaller fins and spikes dot its neck.

Overview[]

Befitting its family and late appearance in the game, the Black Dragon is a force to be reckoned with, boasting high HP and offensive stats. Its non-elemental physical attacks are strong but not particularly noteworthy; the real problem comes from its potent Dark magic. It has three spells to choose from, all multi-target and sporting slightly above-average Accuracy; Pulsar has a decent chance to debuff Magic Attack, Antimatter hits one player hard (at the cost of doing much less damage to the other two and having no special effects), and its Black Megaflare has a high chance to debuff HP on top of inflicting Dispel. To top it off, the Black Dragon can roar to buff the Magic Attack of itself and its allies.

Prior to the v2 update, a programming error caused the Black Dragon to only use its Dark Magic; as a result, Syphon and Berserk had no effect on it. Following the update, it has access to all of its attacks, only spamming its magic at less than 32% HP; Syphon now locks it into Bite and Headbutt, while Berserk makes it spam Pulsar and Antimatter. The latter may be preferable if the party has strong Dark resistance, especially since the foe is very Syphon-resistant. Either way, preventing Black Megaflare is very helpful; if that isn't an option, the Black Dragon should be killed as quickly as possible to prevent it from crippling the party's bulk.

Aside from the obvious Dark absorption, the Black Dragon is resistant to every element aside from Water and Holy, which serve as its main weaknesses. The latter is especially effective, but Water attacks like Aqua Arrow and Flood remain effective options. In terms of status effects, it is immune to Doom, Instant Death, and debuffs to its magic stats; it's also very resistant to Stun, Freeze, Syphon, and Dispel.

If "More Foe Resistance" is active, the Black Dragon gains an additional Bio absorption, an immunity to Weaken and Accuracy/Evade drops, and a resistance to Stagger.

Battle Logic[]

The following describes general logic of the enemy and attack patterns, with chances of each attack to be used. Conditions are listed from highest to lowest priority unless specified otherwise.

  • Syphoned → Bite (1/2), Headbutt (1/2);
  • Berserked → Pulsar (1/2), Antimatter (1/2);
  • >65% HP → Bite (2/8), Headbutt (2/8), Pulsar (1/8), Antimatter (1/8), Roar (2/8);
  • ≤65% to >32% HP → Bite (1/5), Pulsar (1/5), Antimatter (1/5), Black Megaflare (1/5), Roar (1/5);
  • ≤32% HP → Pulsar (1/3), Antimatter (1/3), Black Megaflare (1/3).

Prior to the v2 update, an extra line of code — which was likely left there by an accident — overwrote the pattern chosen by a copy of the one initiated at ≤32% HP, rendering all other patterns impossible.
