The Blood Blade is a recurring sword available for Matt in the Epic Battle Fantasy series. So far, it has appeared in every main series game except for Epic Battle Fantasy 5.

Description[]

In the first three games, the Blood Blade appears as a large red sword roughly carved from rock or crystal. The blade is long, thin, and straight near the tip, gradually becoming wider and more jagged near the base. Numerous spikes surround an irregular, lighter red section in the middle of the blade near the grey hilt, as if part of the rock was chipped off to expose an inner layer. A smaller mass of red spikes sticks out of the other end of the hilt.

In the fourth game, the Blood Blade was redesigned with a much sleeker, more refined blade that appears to be made of polished red crystal and only has a few small points on its base. The hilt is much more elaborate, appearing to reach across the base of the blade to hold it in place. The hilt is also studded with red crystals, including a large one on the guard and two tiny ones on the pommel. There also appears to be white wrappings on the hilt, presumably to increase grip.

Over its many appearances, the Blood Blade has consistently emphasized Matt's survivability by giving him the ability to drain HP with his weapon-elemental skills; it often empowers his Life Drain skill as well. Unfortunately, it also tends to have poor stats; among swords, its Attack is usually tied for the second-lowest at best. Coupled with the turn needed to switch to or from it in battle, and its usefulness is often dependent on Matt's allies taking the offensive to compensate for his own limited damage output.

Epic Battle Fantasy[]

The Blood Blade is a non-elemental sword that gives Matt a decent boost to both defenses and a 60% boost to Drain, along with the ability to drain HP with Matt's other weapon-elemental skills (Normal Attack, Windslash, and Legend). While it doesn't have as much bulk as the Stone Edge, nor the offensive bonus of the Heaven's Gate, its Drain attack is comparable to that of the Soul Eater, thereby becoming the most effective way to deal damage and heal at the same time. Adding a drain effect to some of Matt's other skills also enables him to keep himself healthy while maintaining a greater amount of damage on one or all foes.

Epic Battle Fantasy 2[]

The Blood Blade offers modest boosts to Matt's Defence, Magic Defence, and Evade, giving it some of the most balanced defenses of any sword; however, it has no offensive bonuses. It adds a minor Poison element to Matt's weapon-elemental attacks while allowing them to drain enemy HP to restore his own; this includes his new Cleaver Limit Break. It also gives Drain a power boost while enabling Matt to remove enemy buffs with Unleash.

Despite a slight Poison element, the Blood Blade is completely outclassed by the Black Fang for Poison damage; not only does the latter have a stronger elemental degree, it can inflict large amounts of Poison with its weapon-elemental attacks, Nettle, and its Unleash. Instead, Matt should use the Blood Blade for its HP-draining abilities, allowing him to attack and heal simultaneously.

Epic Battle Fantasy 3[]

The Blood Blade is a utility sword with poor offenses, minor boosts to HP and Evade, and a small Magic Defence bonus; however, it's one of only three swords to increase the latter stat, along with the Swordbreaker and the Rune Blade. Its main focus is keeping Matt healthy; it empowers Drain and gives his other weapon-elemental skills the ability to drain HP. Its Unleash lowers the victim's Defence while raising Matt's own, simultaneously covering his unboosted defensive stat while allowing him to hit the foe a little harder on subsequent turns.

Outside of its HP-draining niche, the Blood Blade is pretty much entirely outclassed by the competition; the Swordbreaker has superior defensive utility, while the Black Fang is far superior for Poison damage (both directly and via Poison status).

The Blood Blade resists the Poison element, up to 40% at Level 5.

Epic Battle Fantasy 4[]

The Blood Blade is a non-elemental sword whose only stats are mediocre offensive boosts. It is tied with the G*bson EB0 and the Bone Blade for the second-lowest Attack of any sword (only ahead of the Rune Blade); its Magic Attack is comparatively better, but still below-average. On the other hand, it drains HP and has a high chance to inflict Tired with weapon-elemental attacks; coupled with its status resistances, it lends itself to a defensive support role that keeps Matt healthy while he slowly wears down enemy Accuracy and Evade for the party's benefit.

The Blood Blade resists Tired and Stun, becoming immune to them both at Level 5.

Trivia[]

  • The Blood Blade's EBF4 design was recolored and used for the design of the Lightning Shard in Epic Battle Fantasy 5.
  • The Blood Blade is a recurring sword in the Final Fantasy series. It generally is a mid-tier weapon that drains HP from the target. The most noteworthy appearance was in Final Fantasy II, where the Blood Blade was considered the best weapon in the game outside of Masamune and/or Excalibur (the ultimate weapons) — besides dealing normal damage, it also chops off a fixed % of the target's health, so it could defeat any boss in but a few blows.
