The Cat Wizard is a foe and a summon in Epic Battle Fantasy 5. It typically appears around the Mystic Woods, although more pop up later on.

Appearance[]

The Cat WIzard is a limbless cat armed with a brown wooden staff wrapped in tan rope and tipped with a red crystal; the crystal can be either spherical or pointed, with the latter giving the staff a similar appearance to the one wielded with the Book of Spells. It also carries a wooden shield in its off "hand", which can be a crude "heater shield" or a round slice of a log with a few stray twigs (resembling the Leaf Shield, minus the leaves).

Overview[]

As its name and weapon suggest, the Cat Wizard is essentially the magical counterpart of the Cat Warrior. While it can still smack a player with its staff, it prefers to cast a variety of elemental spells; most deal magic damage, with the exception of Ivy. While these attacks are not particularly strong and their associated status effects are either negligibly weak or unlikely to take hold, they do give the Cat Wizard a good amount of coverage (Fire, Thunder, Ice, Wind, and Bio).

The Cat Wizard can also use its magic to support the enemy wave, healing an ally or buffing their Magic Attack; as long as it has its shield, it can also give itself Defend status. Its support abilities are further enhanced on higher difficulty levels; Star Power grants Good Luck and Defend adds several stacks of Bless.

Between its surprisingly potent support magic and its wide range of elemental spells, the Cat Wizard can become rather annoying if not dealt with quickly. Fortunately, it has low HP, no resistances, and three easily-accessible elemental weaknesses. Furthermore, its shield can be knocked away with a powerful attack, halving its base defenses and disabling its Defend move; at this point, it can only fall back on its slightly above-average Evade.

Like many spellcasting foes, the Cat Wizard is crippled by Syphon, being reduced to its basic, effect-less physical attack for the duration of the status. On the other hand, Berserk will not disable the Wizard's magic, only preventing it from Defending itself if it still has its shield.

The Cat Wizard's main weaknesses are Fire and Bio, but it also takes extra damage from Water attacks. It has no resistances whatsoever, even with "More Foe Resistance" enabled; however, the challenge will remove its Fire weakness while reducing its Bio and Water weaknesses.

Battle Logic[]

The following describes general logic of the enemy and attack patterns, with chances of each attack to be used. Conditions are listed from highest to lowest priority unless specified otherwise.

Action

  • If catch score >55 and all players are Lovable → Surrender;
  • If Syphoned → Hit;
  • If it's Berserked, it lost its shield, or it used Defend last turn → Star Power (5/15), Heal (5/15), Fire (1/15), Thunder (1/15), Ice (1/15), Gust (1/15), Ivy (1/15)
  • Otherwise → Star Power (5/20), Heal (5/20), Fire (1/20), Thunder (1/20), Ice (1/20), Gust (1/20), Ivy (1/20),
    Defend (5/20).

*Heal will always target the most damaged foe.

Counter (only if Counter-Attacking Foes is enabled)

  • 100% and not Syphoned → Fire (1/5), Thunder (1/5), Ice (1/5), Gust (1/5), Ivy (1/5).

Summon[]

The Cat Wizard can be captured and used as a summon; it can also be called between turns by the Cat Ears (female hat). It casts Heal on a single player, restoring some of their HP. Unlike Heal More being used on a single target, it is not hampered by cooldowns, so it can be summoned multiple times in one turn.
