Crystal staff

The Crystal Staff is a non-elemental staff available for Natalie in Epic Battle Fantasy 3 and 4. It is one of Natalie's signature weapons along with the Dark Tooth, having been used by her ever since Epic Battle Fantasy (although it only appeared briefly in Epic Battle Fantasy 2), and being her default staff equipped in Epic Battle Fantasy 3 and 4.

Description[]

The Crystal Staff is a slightly curved wooden staff with white bindings around the middle and a head made of three "branches" of different shapes and sizes. A large blue crystal rests between the upper two branches, with a red bow tied to the head beneath it.

The Crystal Staff offers great Magic Attack and a significant amount of MP, complementing Natalie as a strong magical attacker. It also provides resistance to the three most common elements in the series: Fire, Thunder, and Ice. While other staves have more versatile stats or elemental boosts that give them superior power with specific spells, the Crystal Staff is typically the most reliable staff for generalized offense; the few staves that surpass its raw magical power tend to make Natalie much more fragile in exchange.

Epic Battle Fantasy 3[]

Befitting its role as starting equipment, the Crystal Staff is a straightforward weapon that amplifies Natalie's best stats. It has high Magic Attack to power up her spells, good MP to let her cast magic more freely, and an Unleash that boosts Magic Attack and Magic Defence, improving Natalie's significant magical bulk while letting her offensive spells hit even harder. At higher levels, it also enables Natalie to counter attacks with Lucky Star; the damage is highly random and generally unimpressive, but being non-elemental means that it can't be resisted or absorbed.

As a generalized offensive staff, the Crystal Staff's main competition comes from the Nimbus and the Obsidian, both of which have identical Magic Attack and different assets in exchange for the MP boost and Lucky Star counter. The Nimbus provides a small HP boost, superior Fire/Ice resistance, and a rare source of Water damage, while the Obsidian has a Defence bonus, a handy Dark boost, and a counter attack that lowers the victim's Magic Defence. However, both staves are only available later in the game, with the Nimbus requiring 20 Medals and the Obsidian being found a ways into Volcano Peak.

The Crystal Staff slightly resists Fire, Thunder, and Ice, up to 30% at maximum level.

Epic Battle Fantasy 4[]

The Crystal Staff offers great Magic Attack and MP, allowing Natalie to both attack and heal more effectively for a longer period of time. Its weapon-elemental skills have a high chance to Dispel their targets; while Natalie lacks a relevant multi-target skill to abuse this, she's still quite capable of debuffing a single target (such as a boss).

The Crystal Staff is a fine day-to-day weapon, able to give Natalie's spells more punch than most of her other staves unless they can exploit their elemental boosts. In turn, it is surpassed by Hela's Staff, but it's much less frail due to a lack of defensive penalties and self-inflicted Curse. As a general-use staff, it's slightly weaker than the Shooting Star, but its resistances and MP boost give it the edge in longevity and its on-hit Dispel adds some utility functions.

The Crystal Staff resists Fire, Thunder, and Ice, but it won't become immune to any of them at Level 5.

Epic Battle Fantasy 3[]

The Crystal Staff is available from the beginning of the game as Natalie's default weapon.

Trivia[]

  • While the Crystal Staff didn't return for Epic Battle Fantasy 5, the Alt Dark Tooth available in an Equip Remix Custom Game takes several cues from it, such as identical resistances and a strong boost to Magic Attack. It also has the EBF4 version's ability to Dispel foes with weapon-elemental skills, albeit less reliably.
