The Devil's Sunrise is a recurring Dark-elemental weapon in the Epic Battle Fantasy series. It is a sword available for Matt in Epic Battle Fantasy 1 and 4, as well as one of the Cat Toys available for NoLegs in Epic Battle Fantasy 5. In EBF5, it is currently exclusive to the paid Steam release of the game and the outdated free Battle Demo.

Description[]

In EBF1 and 4, the Devil's Sunrise has a long silver blade with a red center and a heavily serrated edge. The black crossguard vaguely resembles a pair of bat wings with a red gem in the center. The hilt is dark grey, with black details on either end and small red studs on the pommel.

In EBF5, the Devil's Sunrise was completely overhauled as a cat toy for NoLegs. It is now a small black sword with a dark red hilt, no crossguard, and a cross-shaped tip to its blade, similar to the Equilibrium. It comes with a black-and-red shield with markings resembling glaring eyes and three jagged metal spikes along the top; this gives it a resemblance to either a demonic cat paw or a head with horns.

The Devil's Sunrise has had dramatically different stats and abilities in each of its appearances - even discounting its change from sword to cat toy - but some of its more consistent traits include a resistance to Fire damage (either directly or via Burn/Scorch resistance), a boost to the wielder's Dark skills, and a Dark-based unleash to improve its damage output.

Epic Battle Fantasy[]

The Devil's Sunrise increases Matt's Defence, Magic Attack, and Magic Defence by small amounts, but it's most notable for its ability to drain MP with its weapon-elemental skills. Unfortunately, it has a severe Attack penalty which drastically reduces Matt's offensive capabilities; this even affects the sword's draining abilities, since the MP gained is based on how much damage was inflicted. It's best used sporadically in order to help Matt restore his MP without resorting to Ethers; once he's topped off, he should switch to another sword, especially if a boss battle is coming up. It also has a small niche for a magic-focused strategy, although the Inferno and especially the Rune Blade tend to outclass it due to their superior Magic Attack.

Epic Battle Fantasy 4[]

The Devil's Sunrise provides a great boost to both Accuracy and Evade (only surpassed by the Silver Blade in both stats), but its offensive stats are below-average. It counters with Quick Slash and can unleash Haunt with any Weapon-elemental skill; the latter deals moderate magical Dark damage (which is boosted by the sword itself), but its true value lies in its ability to inflict Curse on the victim, slowly degrading their defenses and leaving them easy pickings for the rest of the party. Natalie especially appreciates Curse, due to the boost it gives to Judgement.

The Devil's Sunrise functions well in the Temple of Godcat, where many enemies are weak to Dark. Unfortunately, Fright and Screamer have low base power, while Sacrifice is very gimmicky; this leaves Dark Flare and the sword's own Haunt unleash as the only ways that Matt can take advantage of the sword's elemental boost. On the other hand, its ability to support parties can be further enhanced by status-changing Flairs; since the Curse infliction comes from the sword's unleash, Matt can inflict two status effects at once if he has the right Flair equipped. The sword's resistances are also fairly useful; late in the game, it can be combined with the Golden Armor to give Matt no less than three elemental absorptions.

The Devil's Sunrise resists Fire, Thunder, and Ice. None of these become an immunity at Level 5.

Epic Battle Fantasy 5[]

Normal[]

The Devil's Sunrise is a potent yet balanced cat toy with a very large boost to NoLegs's Attack (the third highest in the game) in exchange for a significant Magic Attack penalty; it also grants solid boosts to Defence and Magic Defence at the expense of a minor Evade penalty. The result is that NoLegs's preferred offensive (physical attacks) is drastically enhanced, and his survivability is slightly increased overall (especially against foes that would be able to bypass his Evade anyway). The cat toy's Weapon-elemental skills have a good chance of inflicting Doom and can unleash Black Spikes for some extra damage that benefits from its Dark boost.

While NoLegs can turn the Devil's Sunrise's on-hit Doom into Instant Death with Bad Luck support (including his own Water Whirl), the cat toy is far better suited for all-out offense. Although it still can't match the Honjo Masamune in raw damage output, it typically outperforms the Riot Shield due to its higher Attack and much less severe Evade penalty; on the other hand, the Riot Shield has far more bulk and useful offensive support effects.

The Devil's Sunrise provides resistances to Holy, Tired, Weaken, Burn, and Scorch. It grants an immunity to all of them at Level 5.

Equip Remix[]

The Alt Devil's Sunrise is a supreme weapon for a pure physical attacker, with astonishing Attack (third-best among Alt cat toys) and good defenses. It powers up NoLegs's Dark skills - including its own Black Spikes unleash - but its weapon-elemental skills have an irritating tendency to inflict Shroud on their targets. This can be nullified by hitting the affected foe with Holy or Wind attacks; alternatively, NoLegs can use a status-changing Flair, which also lets him slightly support his team (or himself, if he's using the Peace Badge).

The Alt Devil's Sunrise also applies Shroud to NoLegs between turns, making it much harder to track his condition outside of brief respites from allied Reflex support. However, Shroud is more of an annoyance than a true drawback; moreover, it gives the cat toy great synergy with the Alt Coat of Teeth, which has similar physical-leaning stats, a second Dark boost, and an identical auto-Shroud penalty (which effectively adds no further hindrance when stacked). Compared to the Alt Buster Sword, it's marginally weaker (except with Dark attacks) and has neither Magic Attack nor a buffing auto-summon, but it's also a lot bulkier, especially against Fire-based foes.

The Alt Devil's Sunrise resists Fire, Dark, Burn, and Scorch. The latter two become an immunity at Level 5.

Trivia[]

  • The Devil's Sunrise is a reference to the sword of the same name in MapleStory.
  • Due to similarities in its design and origin, the Devil's Sunrise sword may be considered a Dark-based counterpart to the Heaven's Gate. On the other hand, its EBF5 version could be considered a Dark counterpart of the King's Guard, due to certain similarities in their stats and resistances.
  • The Devil's Sunrise is the only sword from EBF1 to not reappear in EBF2.
  • The Devil's Sunrise is the only sword besides the Rune Blade to have had the ability to drain MP with its weapon-elemental skills.
