The Earthquake Bomb is a foe in Epic Battle Fantasy 5. It is found in the Mineshaft Maze, and is also summoned by Neon Valhalla.

Appearance[]

The Earthquake Bomb is a large bomb with a massive, pointed warhead that acts like a giant drill. It is predominantly brass and tan-colored, similar to the Steam Fish and the Neon Valhalla. Like all Bombs, it is mounted on a simple launching frame with a countdown light next to it; the lights are illuminated in sequence as it prepares to launch.

Overview[]

You have three turns to destroy an Earthquake Bomb, and can buy more time with status effects that prevent it from taking a turn; Stun and Freeze both work, but the former is more efficient due to lack of resistance. The three lamps on the Bomb's launching frame indicate how much time is left; when the topmost (green) lamp is on, the Bomb will launch itself on its next turn. This is a good time to Syphon it (if it isn't already); a Syphoned Earthquake Bomb will fail to launch, forcing it to Surrender. Status-boosting gear is recommended to help overcome its great Syphon resistance.

Unlike other Bombs, the Earthquake Bomb's explosion is fairly easy to endure, being 100% Earth-based and relatively weak compared to its explosive kin (although it can occasionally inflict Stagger). Unfortunately, it'll land on a player prior to exploding, dealing utterly ludicrous damage that is likely to kill the target even on lower difficulties. This attack is only slightly Earth-based, making resistance all but useless, and without full Earth immunity, the follow-up explosion can easily finish off the injured player if they survived through Morale. Due to the long delay between the initial impact and the subsequent explosion, not even Auto-Revive is guaranteed to counter this combo.

Since both of the Earthquake Bomb's attacks are physical, the Invisible status makes it harmless (aside from the Stagger status the explosion inflicts, which can be resisted normally). If a player is given the Target Badge/Agnry Faic and an Invisible-applying gear (Ninja Gear or Ninja Skirt), the Earthquake Bomb can be reduced to its Explode attack, which is far milder. However, if there is any danger of foes using magic on the same turn (such as other types of Bombs), the only practical option is to destroy the Earthquake Bomb. If status effects are infeasible, hitting it with a Wetting-attack such as Bubble Blast and following it up with Plasma Field or Iceberg should deal heavy damage. It has terrible Evade, so most attacks will hit it without trouble.

The Earthquake Bomb is weak to Thunder, Water, Ice, and especially Earth and Bomb. On the other hand, it's immune to Fire, Bio, Wind, Burn, Scorch, Poison, Virus, and Stagger; it's also highly resistant to Chill, Freeze, Syphon, Doom, and Instant Death, strongly resistant to Accuracy and Evade debuffs, and somewhat resistant to having its offenses and defenses lowered. With "More Foe Resistance" enabled, it absorbs Bomb, becomes immune to Syphon, Doom, and Instant Death, and loses its weaknesses to Thunder and Ice.

Unlike most foes in EBF5, the Earthquake Bomb cannot be captured to be used as a summon.

Battle Logic[]

The following describes general logic of the enemy and attack patterns, with chances of each attack to be used. Conditions are listed from highest to lowest priority unless specified otherwise.

  • Counter = 1 and Syphoned → Surrender;
  • Counter = 1 → Decrease Counter by 1 → Launch & Drill;
  • Counter > 1 → Decrease Counter by 1.

* Counter starts at 3.

Unlike most other foes, the Earthquake Bomb doesn't get a counter when Counter-Attacking Foes is enabled.

Trivia[]

  • The Earthquake Bomb is the only Bomb that deals physical damage instead of magical damage. It is also the only member of the Bomb family with a single-target skill, as well as the only one whose attack has two stages instead of one.
  • With its large, pointed warhead, the Earthquake Bomb slightly resembles the pre-EBF5 design of the Nuclear Bomb.
