Heaven's Gate is a recurring Holy-elemental sword in the Epic Battle Fantasy series.

Description[]

Heaven's Gate is a large, two-handed broadsword with an elaborate golden handguard. The handle is dark red with a golden point, and the guard bears two red gems and several small wing designs. The bright, white-silver blade has two curved points at the base, four smaller points along its length as it tapers towards the tip, and diamond-like red markings in its center.

Heaven's Gate is one of Matt's most iconic weapons, being wielded in virtually all of his appearances (including Brawl Royale) and often being available from the beginning of the game (with EBF3 and EBF5 being the main exceptions). It usually gives Matt a balanced offensive boost, allows his weapon-elemental attacks to inflict some Holy damage, and increases the power of his Holy skills. Later games also allow it to unleash a Holy skill with weapon-elemental attacks, as well as giving it resistances to various threats (typically including Holy and Dispel).

Epic Battle Fantasy[]

Heaven's Gate is Matt's default and most balanced weapon, slightly increasing all of his stats. Besides the Seiken boost and a very slight Legend boost, it also makes all weapon-elemental attacks (Normal Attack, Drain, Wind Slash and Legend) Holy-elemental, calculated off targets' Seiken resistance. It has no particular weaknesses, but it can struggle to stand out if Holy damage isn't specifically required; the Stone Edge has superior defenses and two elemental boosts in exchange for a Magic Attack penalty, while the Inferno is better for mixed-offensive strategies (since it essentially transfers the Defence boost to Magic Attack).

Epic Battle Fantasy 2[]

Heaven's Gate gives balanced boosts to both offences and defenses, as well as a small Evade bonus. It can reduce the Accuracy of foes with its Unleash, and passively increases the power of Seiken. Its main competition as a generalist weapon is the Blizzard, which has identical defenses and stronger offences at the cost of Accuracy and Evade penalties; the Stone Edge has even better bulk and Attack power in exchange for a small Magic Attack drop and a much heavier Evade penalty. On the other hand, Heaven's Gate is completely superior to the Rune Blade save for a negligible amount of Evade and the latter's on-hit MP drain; it even has a higher elemental degree on its weapon-elemental skills.

Epic Battle Fantasy 3[]

Heaven's Gate has solid boosts to Attack and Magic Attack, as well as a pinch of Accuracy and Evade. It has a chance to debuff enemies' Accuracy with weapon-elemental attacks and empowers Holy skills like its Shine unleash; unfortunately, a programming mistake caused the latter to be pathetically weak even with the boost. Using Unleash with this sword will cure Matt's status ailments, but this only means Poison and Doom in practice; all other statuses prevent Unleash's use.

Stat-wise, Heaven's Gate is closest to the Avenger, which has an additional HP boost and much earlier availability; however, Heaven's Gate has a much more useful Holy boost and arguably superior resistances. Although its damage output will be surpassed by the likes of the Blizzard or the Soul Eater, its lack of stat penalties can let it retain a niche as a reliable day-to-day weapon when heavy attack power isn't necessary.

Heaven's Gate resists Holy and Dispel, with the latter becoming an immunity at Level 5.

Epic Battle Fantasy 4[]

Heaven's Gate has respectable offences and a small Evade boost. It can counter with a Normal Attack, which (like its other single-target weapon-elemental skills) may unleash Holy Sword as a bonus skill; this benefits from its elemental boost along with Matt's natural Holy attacks.

While Heaven's Gate has less raw power than the Sapphire Giant (and its comparatively superior Accuracy and Magic Attack aren't particularly noteworthy), it is otherwise comparable to most of Matt's elemental swords. Compared to Matt's other default weapon, the Silver Blade, it's generally stronger unless the foes are both resistant to Holy and weak to Wind, and should serve as Matt's primary sword until other options become available. Like all swords, it is effectively replaced by the Equilibrium at the very end of Battle Mountain; until then, it is best used when Matt needs its resistances or a boost to his Holy damage.

Heaven's Gate resists Holy, Weaken and Dispel. It becomes immune to the latter two at Level 5.

Epic Battle Fantasy 5[]

Normal[]

Heaven's Gate has middle-of-the-road Attack and Magic Attack backed by a little Evade. It will counter attacks with Unleash, which may cast Seiken as a bonus skill like the rest of Matt's weapon-elemental skills. Combined with its resistances, it's a fair choice for an offensive Matt build, especially as the only sword to boost his Holy skills; however, other swords are overall stronger (especially the Soul Eater).

The Heaven's Gate resists Holy, Dispel, Weaken and Tired. All but the first become an immunity at Level 5.

Equip Remix[]

Alt Heaven's Gate is an interesting defensive weapon suited for a tank build. Its stats are unimpressive but balanced, with below-average Attack and Magic Attack, modest Defence and Magic Defence, and small boosts to HP and Accuracy. While it increases the power of Holy skills, its mediocre offensive stats mean it won't make much use of said boost; nevertheless, it has a high chance of unleashing Purging Flame, which can Dispel the target and debuff their Magic Attack. Its weapon-elemental skills also have a massive chance of inflicting Weaken, and it grants Auto-Revive to Matt when he Defends himself.

With the Alt Golden Axe and the Alt Love Blade boasting higher power and different flavors of status support, Alt Heaven's Gate mainly sees use in a Target tank build to Matt from several dangerous status effects while adding Auto-Revive to any other on-Defend effects he is using. Its high Weaken chance also can be useful to help lower enemy offences while leaving them vulnerable to follow-up Dark attacks. In terms of raw bulk, it's surpassed by the Alt Hyper Drill and the Alt Soul Eater, but the former is available far later in the game and the latter is burdened with elemental weaknesses and auto-Scorch.

Alt Heaven's Gate resists Holy, Curse, Bad Luck, Doom, and Instant Death; at Level 5, it becomes immune to all of them.

Trivia[]

  • Heaven's Gate is a reference to the two-handed sword of the same name in MapleStory, a game that Matt Roszak played a lot in his youth.
  • Heaven's Gate is one of the most iconic symbols of Epic Battle Fantasy. Apart from being Matt's signature weapon, in every game from EBF3 onwards, it also appears as the loading screen's progress bar.
  • A larger version of Heaven's Gate appears in the center of both the Ragnarok Limit Break and the Catastrophe summon. A white silhouette of the sword appears as part of the animations for Light Blade and Seiken.
  • In EBF5, Matt references his association with Heaven's Gate when he wields it in battle for the first time, noting that the sword feels oddly familiar. However, due to the nature of EBF5, Matt dismisses it as some bizarre coincidence.
