The Matt Doll is a foe and a summon in Epic Battle Fantasy 5. It typically appears in haunted areas like the Mystic Woods, Redpine Town and The Rapture, often alongside other Dolls.

Appearance[]

The Matt Doll is a small taupe-colored voodoo doll meant to resemble Matt. It is covered with stitches and discolored patches, with a pair of blue button eyes and a head of yellow "hair". It dons a small paper cutout of the Captain's Hat with a small White Feather perched on it, and wields half of a scissor to imitate Matt's preference for swords.

Overview[]

Much like its player counterpart, the Matt Doll mainly uses single-target physical attacks; either a non-elemental three-slash combo or Light Blade. It's also capable of casting an offensive buff on itself to bolster its damage or a defensive buff on any foe to make them a bit more resilient. Stat-wise, it has above-average Defence and below-average Magic Defence, making magic attacks more effective than physical attacks.

Like other Dolls, hitting this foe will result in the corresponding player taking damage equal to a % of their max HP proportional to how much of the Doll's max HP was lost to the attack (this takes into account overkill damage), even if they are in backup; Instant Death will also trigger this effect, as it's essentially an attack that deals damage equal to 100% of their HP. Healing the Doll will also in turn heal the corresponding player (this only happens if the Doll isn't at full HP). Damage/healing isn't affected by Invisible/Enchanted, but will be halved by Defend (except when Doom kills the Doll). This passive ability can be blocked by Syphoning the foe.

In general, the Matt Doll is a moderate threat on account of its Sympathy ability, but it becomes far more dangerous if allowed to buff itself. It should be dealt with carefully, and destroyed while Syphoned or while Matt is at full health.

The Matt Doll absorbs Dark, but is weak to Fire and especially Holy; however, it may be safer to kill a low-health Matt Doll with a neutral attack so as to prevent accidentally killing Matt. It has no status resistances or weaknesses. If "More Foe Resistance" is enabled, it retains its Dark absorption while gaining a significant Syphon resistance, massive Earth and Water weaknesses, and immunity to all other elements.

Battle Logic[]

The following describes general logic of the enemy and attack patterns, with chances of each attack to be used. Conditions are listed from highest to lowest priority unless specified otherwise.

Action

  • If catch score >55 and all players are Lovable → Flee
  • If Syphoned or Berserked → Triple Slice;
  • Otherwise → Triple Slice (1/3), Light Blade (1/3), Buff (1/3).
    • If the Matt Doll has less than a 15% Attack buff → Buff = Temper;
    • If the Matt Doll has less than a 15% Defence buff → Buff = Heavenly Shield on self;
    • Otherwise → Buff = Heavenly Shield on most damaged foe.

Additionally, on Hard or Epic difficulties, if the Matt Doll is Syphoned at the start of its turn, it'll automatically inflict 1x Berserk on itself (this doesn't take up its action).

Summon[]

The Matt Doll can be captured and used as a summon; it can also be randomly summoned between turns by the Alt Captain's Hat. It casts a modified version of Temper on an ally, giving them a few stacks of Bless and a powerful Attack buff.
