The Red Dragon is a foe and a summon in Epic Battle Fantasy 4. It appears mostly in burnt areas, such as the lava-filled portions of the Crystal Caverns and Lankyroot Jungle.

Appearance[]

The Red Dragon is essentially a smaller version of Blaze, one of the Pyrohydra's heads in Epic Battle Fantasy 3. It is a massive reptilian monster with red scales and a tan underbelly, with numerous spikes and horns protruding from its head and the back of its serpentine neck. It has orange eyes with slit-like pupils and a mouthful of sharp teeth; the ones in its upper jaw seem to go all the way to the back of its skull, assuming that the last three or four aren't actually additional horns on its jowls.

Overview[]

Although it's not quite as powerful as its EBF3 predecessor, the Red Dragon is still a foe not to be trifled with. It uses a variety of non-elemental melee strikes and magical Fire attacks, with the latter having higher-than-normal Accuracy and high Burn chances. It can also belch smoke over the party to Burn them while debuffing their Accuracy, or roar to provide Brave and a huge Attack buff to every foe in the wave (including itself). As its HP falls, it'll start using Red Megaflare, which essentially acts like a powered-up version of its Ranged Fire Burp; it does more damage, has even higher Accuracy, and inflicts a decent Defence debuff in addition to a Burn.

Despite having some support abilities (particularly if accompanied by strong physically-inclined foes), the Red Dragon's forte remains pure damage output, especially given its high base offenses. Fortunately, most of its damage is purely Fire-based, so high elemental resistance will drastically reduce the threat it poses to the party. If their Fire resistance is high enough, they should aim to apply Berserk or knock the Dragon's HP below 40% as quickly as possible; this prevents it from using its non-elemental skills in addition to its buffing Roar. On the other hand, Syphon prevents the Dragon from using its Fire attacks and its Accuracy-debuffing move, but the party will have to contend with its physical attacks and buffing ability if they manage to circumvent its high Syphon resistance.

The Red Dragon's resistances are surprisingly sparse; it absorbs Fire, is immune to Bomb, Doom, and Instant Death, and strongly resists Stun, Freeze, Syphon, and Accuracy/Evade debuffs. On the other hand, it's very weak to both Ice and Water; coupled with a lack of Wet resistance, this encourages the player to set up a devastating elemental combo against it. If "More Foe Resistance" is active, it becomes immune to Weaken and resistant to Ice, Holy, Stagger and offensive debuffs, but gains a serious Earth weakness.

Battle Logic[]

The following describes general logic of the enemy and attack patterns, with chances of each attack to be used. Conditions are listed from highest to lowest priority unless specified otherwise.

  • Syphoned → Bite (1/3), Headbutt (1/3), Roar (1/3);
  • Berserked → Same as ≤32% HP;
  • >65% HP → Bite (1/5), Headbutt (1/5), Melee Fire Burp (1/5), Smoke Burp (1/5), Roar (1/5);
  • ≤65% to >32% HP → Bite (1/6), Melee Fire Burp (1/6), Ranged Fire Burp (1/6), Smoke Burp (1/6), Red Megaflare (1/6), Roar (1/6);
  • ≤32% HP → Melee Fire Burp (1/4), Ranged Fire Burp (1/4), Smoke Burp (1/4), Red Megaflare (1/4).

Summon[]

The Red Dragon summon can be obtained from a chest in the Crystal Caverns, specifically in the room directly above the one where the Crystal Golem is fought. The chest is guarded by a battle that appears as a Red Dragon, and is blocked by a golden box (requiring a spare Gold Key) and a river of lava (requiring Thermal Boots).

When called upon, the Red Dragon uses its Red Megaflare on all foes, hitting them for strong magical Fire damage and a small chance of Burn. It has high Accuracy.
