Whirlwind

Whirlwind cast on a Clay Idol, EBF4

Whirlwind, known as Tornado in EBF3, is a recurring advanced Wind-elemental skill in the Epic Battle Fantasy series. It is one of Anna's skills in Epic Battle Fantasy 4 and 5, and available for any player in Epic Battle Fantasy 3 through items.

Description[]

Whirlwind blasts the target with a small tornado, dealing medium magical Wind damage. Its secondary effect varies between games; it debuffs targets' Attack in EBF3, Magic Defence in EBF4 and EBF5, and in EBF5 it also inflicts the Light status effect, boosting the power of any subsequent Wind-elemental attacks.

Whirlwind is the stronger variant of Gust and the concentrated version of Hurricane. Although it provides a relatively rare source of Wind damage for the party, it tends to be somewhat suboptimal in most of its appearances. In EBF3, it's reliant on an item and only reaches its full power when used by Lance if he has the Ark Angel equipped. In EBF4 and 5, it runs on Anna's weaker offensive stat; in EBF5, it also has to contend with skills like Tempest and Tornado Tantrum. However, its ability to inflict Light and a Magic Defence debuff can be helpful for setting up damage combos on Wind-weak foes, especially if an ally has learned Airwave or Shockwave.

Tornado is accessible to players only through the Light Feather item, which casts the spell on the target chosen. Its power is boosted by the Ark Angel gun.

Statistics
Name Target Power Type Element Status Effect Acc Crit RdF
Tornado Single Variable Magical 100% Element Wind 50% 30% StatDown Attack 120% 10% 10%
Notes: Power is 40 when cast by foes, 90 when cast via Light Feather, or 180 (2x) when cast via Light Feather and the user has Ark Angel (gun) equipped. Like Meow Meow, ignores user's Magic Attack stat and any bonuses to it, instead using the user's level * 3 formula to get a value to multiply the skill's power by. Also ignores Accuracy buffs and equipment bonuses to it, yet still considers the base stat and the bonus from permanent stat food, Lollipop.

Epic Battle Fantasy 4[]

Whirlwind is a skill exclusive to the new party member, Anna. It can now debuff Magic Defence instead of Attack, and the infliction chance is slightly higher; however, the debuff itself is slightly weaker. Curiously, it has a critical chance of 0%, which means that it will never score a critical hit without Stagger or Brave.

Epic Battle Fantasy 5[]

Whirlwind is the upgraded form of Gust, and becomes Hurricane at Level 5. It has regained its critical hit chance, allowing it to potentially inflict a critical hit without boosting status effects. Additionally, it has the ability to inflict Light on top of a Magic Defence debuff.

Trivia[]

  • Whirlwind's EBF4 incarnation is one of the few damaging skills without a critical hit chance; as such, it cannot land a critical hit without Stagger or Brave.
